What ails America and many of the world's democracies is that the interests of a handful of elites are making policy choices at odds with the will of a majority of us. The liberal versus conservative battle that plays out daily in the media is a manipulative melodrama designed to perpetuate the false dichotomy that America must be polarized until the "other side comes to its senses". That is absurd. People are not that shallow, nor are we that ideologically rigid. Good policy requires nuance and solutions with broad appeal.
The real challenge to good government is bridging the disconnect between empowered office holders and the rest of us. The majority of Americans -- regardless of party affiliation -- simply want solutions to the most pressing problems facing our communities, our states, and our nation. Votesphere is a new paradigm and a new tool (smartphone app) that facilitates formation of ad hoc issue coalitions. Such ad hoc issue coalitions are the only way to create effective bridges between the impenetrable ideological dogma of the Republicans and Democrats that have created artificial divides and perpetuate the myth of a polarized America. Votesphere is designed to clearly illuminate where the governed -- and the governors -- agree or deviate in our goals and objectives. It is obvious that elections still matter. However, we need something other than partisan bickering between elections. Votesphere will make our elected representatives more accountable by showing exactly which political leaders' positions are at odds with the priorities and preferences of a majority of their constituents. |
